Memorial Tattoos
Some tattoos are a promise
When someone walks in with a folded photo, a set of dog tags or a handwritten letter, we know what kind of session it's going to be. We're veterans and first responders ourselves. We take the time to get it right.
Memorial tattoo ideas
- Realism portraits: the most personal tribute, and the most technically demanding. Chief leads black and gray and color realism portraits. Book Chief
- Handwriting and signatures: a "love, Mom" or a line from a last letter, tattooed as it was written. Great for fine line. Book Hailee
- Fallen soldier battle cross: rifle, helmet, boots and dog tags, often with a name, rank, date or unit.
- Dog tags, unit insignia and flags: bring an accurate, high-resolution image of the real insignia.
- Firefighter and first responder tributes: the Maltese cross, badges, department numbers and the thin red or blue line.
- Softer tributes: heartbeat lines, birth flowers, a cardinal, a favorite flower or a symbol only you understand.
- Pets: portraits or paw prints for the family members who had four legs.
How to plan a memorial tattoo
- Start with the story. Tell us who it's for and what you want people to feel when they see it.
- Bring the best reference you have. For portraits, the original high-resolution photo, well lit and in focus. For handwriting, the original or a high-resolution scan.
- Give it enough size. Faces and small text need room to stay clear for years.
- Check your regs if you serve. Confirm placement with your branch's current tattoo policy (for the Army, AR 670-1).
- Take your time. There's no rush on a piece like this. We'll plan it with you.
A note on respect
Many veterans feel strongly that badges, tabs and qualification symbols belong only on those who earned them. If you're honoring a family member's service, consider designing it clearly as a tribute, with their name or "in honor of."

Frequently asked questions
- What is a memorial tattoo?
A memorial tattoo is a permanent tribute to someone who has died, such as a parent, child, battle buddy, fellow firefighter or pet. It can be a name and date, a symbol, handwriting or a full realism portrait. - Who does memorial portrait tattoos at Flashover Ink?
Kevin "Chief" Guillot, co-owner and Army veteran, leads black and gray and color realism portraits. For fine line tributes and handwriting, book Hailee Scott. Other artists can be requested through the shop link. - What photo should I bring for a portrait tattoo?
The original high-resolution photo, well lit, with the face in sharp focus. Screenshots and heavily filtered photos lose detail. - Can you tattoo a loved one's handwriting?
Yes. Bring the original or a high-resolution scan. Your artist may clean up the lines slightly so they hold up in skin. - Can soldiers get memorial tattoos while on active duty?
Yes, within your branch's tattoo policy. Check current regulations with your chain of command before choosing hands, neck or other visible placements.
